Freezing fog warnings in place as cold snap set to drag on

Dale Hipkiss, national network manager at National Highways, warned: “Freezing conditions bring so many hazards, such as ice and snow. Take every possible step to understand your journey in advance and allow lots of extra time when travelling to prepare for the unexpected.”Justine Shotton of the British Veterinary Association said: “Outdoor rabbit or guinea pig hutches should be protected from snow, rain and cold winds. Dogs and cats will need easy access to a cosy shelter indoors.

“Consider a coat for older dogs or those with thin fur to keep them warm during walks, and always wipe your dog’s paws and belly on returning home to remove any grit, as it can be toxic if ingested.” Frosty mornings are likely to hang around for several days, with patchy frost and fog expected. Frost is likely particularly in the South and the South East, the Met Office said, with thick cloud cover bringing milder temperatures in the North and in Scotland in the days ahead.has been extended until Wednesday, with social and healthcare services alerted to help protect the vulnerable.

Forecasters say there “will be some frosty mornings to come” as the overnight temperatures “will dip between -5°C to -8°C in some locations.”we’re over the worst“We’ve got to keep an eye on the risk of fog [during] this cold spell, although the main hazards from it look like they are beginning to diminish.”

Conditions may finally improve from the weekend, however, when overnight temperatures are expected to remain above freezing, and daytime highs could hit upwards of 10°C in parts of England – although there will be some showers in the days ahead.
