Facebook parent Meta said it has taken further action to derail efforts originating in Russia to influence the narrative over the country’s attack on Ukraine.

The social-media company said it removed about 200 accounts operated from Russia that were trying to get other accounts suspended. “The individuals behind it coordinated to falsely report people for various violations, including hate speech, bullying and inauthenticity, in an attempt to have them and their posts removed from Facebook,” the company said.

“The majority of these fictitious reports focused on people in Ukraine and Russia, but the network also reported users in Israel, the United States and Poland,” Meta said in a new threat report. The activity increased just before Russia launched its attack on neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, Meta said. In some cases the accounts submitted thousands of complaints against those it was targeting, the company said.

Meta said it took down a cooking-themed group on its platform where some of the activity appeared to be coordinated.
