The Olympic boxing champion said he won’t be killing himself to stay on the dancefloor
Michael Carruth said he his willing to hang up his gloves and call off the first elimination on Dancing With The Stars on Sunday if his injury gets any worse. The Olympic boxing champion, who was forced to pull out of Sunday’s group male performance due to a tear in his calf muscle, added that he thinks things are going to get ‘bitchy’ next week amongst the competitive group.
The legendary boxer, who won Ireland’s first Olympic medal in 36 years with broken hands in 1992 said it’s not the worst injury of his life. However, when asked if he will be dancing on Sunday, he told the Irish Daily Mirror he won’t be killing himself to stay on the dancefloor.“If I burst this injury and make it worse I run the risk of a rupture, so I have to be clever and say I am pulling myself out of this because there is no point putting people up for elimination if I can’t go on with this. “There is no point in me being the martyr and someone else going out. If I feel this is going to get worse I will pull myself out of this.“I’ll be devastated because I have been training for six weeks for this. “But if I feel the leg is going to go again, I will talk to the producers and say this isn’t going to survive.” Hoping to overcome it and to add a glitterball to his Olympic gold, he added: “I’m taking everything I’m supposed to. I was never disciplined handling an injury as a boxer because I injured myself so many times. Comparing it to his painful journey to the Olympic games, he said: “I had my two hands broken when I won the Olympic Games but they wrapped me up and strapped me up and I got it done.“I have a four inch tear on my calf muscle and I have a tear on one of the tendons as well.“So I am going to be clever til Wednesday or Thursday then we’re going to have to try the leg out myself and my dance partner Karen and see if I can dance.” Following two weeks grace on the dancefloor, tensions are set to rise at the weekend with the first elimination imminent. And opening up about the feeling back stage, Carruth, 52, said: “I think next week it might get a bit bitchy. “I done the Celebrity jigs and Reels TV show years ago and when it came to the first couple of days doing the dancing no one cared but coming up to the elimination people were desperate to get their makeup done ... the nerves just kick in. The first two weeks of DWTS was a cushion as no one got eliminated.
