President Higgins made the remarks in Rome on the fringes of the World Food Forum where he is keynote speaker
President Michael D Higgins has strongly criticised EU chief Ursula von der Leyen for her pro-Israeli stance and solidarity with the country shown mainly through a visit to Israel over the past week.
“It may not have been meant to have malevolent consequences but certainly we need a better performance in relation to European Union diplomacy and practice.”Ms von der Leyen visited Israel in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 Israelis. President Higgins was speaking freely when he spoke his mind in Rome on the fringes of the World Food Forum in the Italian capital where he is keynote speaker later this week.
Since then, the Israeli armed forces have killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and have shut off all food, water and electricity to more than two million people in Gaza, prompting accusations of war crimes.
