Former Irish Finance Minister Michael McGrath has been appointed as the EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law. The announcement was made by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday morning.

Former Finance Minister Michael McGrath has been announced as EU Commissioner for Democracy , Justice and Rule of Law.

Ms von der Leyen confirmed that he had been given the Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law Commissionership. It had been hoped in Government circles that Mr McGrath would receive a financial or economic portfolio due to his background as both Finance Minister and Minister for Public Expenditure.

The Irish Mirror also understands that there was initially push back to the justice portfolio but sources stressed that this was a “big” role."I have worked closely with President Ursula Von der Leyen in recent weeks and today’s announcement is a vote of confidence in Ireland’s candidate," he said.
