The Fianna Fáil leader said on Tuesday that a programme for government must be developed that “best serves the Irish people” and not just political parties
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has said it is “far too early” and “premature” to state whether matters like the rotating Taoiseach arrangement with Fine Gael will remain in place or be changed.
Mr Martin is on course to be Taoiseach. Fianna Fáil will be the largest party in the Dáil with 48 seats, followed by Sinn Féin with 39 and Fine Gael with 38. At Farmleigh House following the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference on Tuesday, Mr Martin said it was too early to discuss these kinds of matters but did not directly answer if he believed there should be an even split in the Taoiseach’s office. He said his party will discuss going into government at Wednesday's meeting.
He argued that a “lot will depend on how the discussions evolve” but added that “the last time that everybody was as anxious to get into government as they might be proclaimed” and that a programme for government must be put together that “best serves the Irish people, not parties”. He added that while “most of the work” to form a government could be done by Christmas, he did not “think we will have reached agreement by Christmas”.
