Micheál Martin will return as Taoiseach, leading the formation of the new Irish government. As TDs await cabinet appointments, a two-week break from parliamentary duties is planned. The Dáil will reconvene in February after an extended hiatus.

Micheál Martin will once again assume the role of Taoiseach this afternoon, marking the formation of the new Irish government. As Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael TDs anxiously await news of their potential Cabinet appointments, they are also preparing for a prolonged break from parliamentary duties. The Dáil , Ireland 's lower house of parliament, has been in recess since November 7th, and TDs will not reconvene until Wednesday, February 5th.

This extended period is reportedly intended to allow newly appointed ministers to familiarize themselves with their respective departments and portfolios.Although the Dáil formally read the names of TDs in the 34th Dáil on December 18th, a failure to nominate a Taoiseach that day has resulted in an extended hiatus. When legislative business resumes on February 5th, it will mark nearly two months since traditional parliamentary proceedings took place in Leinster House. However, the Dáil will convene today, with proceedings commencing at 11 am. Albert Dolan, the youngest TD from Fianna Fáil representing Galway East, is expected to nominate Micheál Martin as Taoiseach. This will be Martin's second appointment to the highest office in Ireland, but this time his family will be present to witness the occasion. Unlike his previous appointment in June 2020, which was curtailed due to the pandemic, Martin will formally meet President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin after 1 pm. The President will then sign the Warrant of Appointment, formally conferring the Seal of the Taoiseach and the Seal of Government upon Martin. Following this ceremony, Martin will convene with TDs to inform them of their Cabinet appointments. The inaugural Cabinet meeting is scheduled to take place at Áras an Uachtaráin later that evening. Fianna Fáil will secure eight ministerial positions, while Fine Gael will hold seven.Sources indicate that Simon Harris is poised to become the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. Jack Chambers, also from Fianna Fáil, is expected to be appointed Minister for Public Expenditure, while Paschal Donohoe, a prominent figure in Fine Gael, will return to the Department of Finance for his third consecutive term. Helen McEntee, the deputy leader of Fine Gael, is widely anticipated to assume the role of Minister for Enterprise. However, there have been recent suggestions that Peter Burke might retain this position, potentially paving the way for McEntee to transition to the Department of Education. The Justice Department is projected to be allocated to Fianna Fáil, with Jim O'Callaghan and James Browne considered as potential candidates for this crucial role. Norma Foley is tipped to take on both the responsibilities of Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural Affairs. Mary Butler may be promoted to Cabinet to become the Minister for Children and Disabilities. Meanwhile, James Lawless and Dara Calleary are both being linked to the Department of Transport. Darragh O'Brien is expected to remain in his position as Minister for Housing. In Fine Gael, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, a TD from Dun Laoghaire, is widely anticipated to be promoted and is being linked with a move to the Department of Health. Martin Heydon is expected to become the new Minister for Agriculture amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Charlie McConalogue's potential role. Patrick O'Donovan is also being considered for a position in education, although he is also being linked with a possible move to the Department of Tourism.
