In his acceptance speech in the Dáil, the Fianna Fáil leader said it was a “profound honour to be nominated to serve as head of the government in a free, democratic and diverse republic”.

Micheál Martin finally became Taoiseach with his family by his side after furious rows in the Dáil on Wednesday postponed the big day.

Unlike the last time Mr Martin was elected Taoiseach in the socially distanced Convention Centre in June 2020, his wife Mary, son Cillian and daughter Aoibhe were there to witness the big day. At the Áras, President Michael D Higgins presented Mr Martin with the Seal of the Taoiseach and Seal of the Government.

The Dáil descended into chaos on Wednesday and had to be suspended three times before a fourth suspension eventually saw it adjourned for the day. Shortly beforehand, Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy emailed members of the Dáil Business Committee stating that TDs in Mr Lowry’s Regional Independent Technical Group would not be allowed to speak. She said she had received a submission from the opposition and it was found that there was “significant ambiguity” in the Dáil rules about how the TDs should be qualified.
