Derry bounced back from a recent run of poor results and rumours of unrest inside the Oak Leaf camp to book their ticket to the All-Ireland quarter-finals
Derry boss Mickey Harte declared his team were ‘doing it for the real supporters’ in the wake of their penalty shootout win over Mayo.
But veteran defender Chrissy McKaigue popped up with a last-gasp fisted equaliser to send a thrilling contest to extra-time at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. “It was a nip and tuck game,” admitted Harte. “It looked like it was going to go to the wire from very early on. Mayo will be kicking themselves that they didn’t seal the game when they had that point and us into the fourth minute of added time.
Shane McGuigan, Conor Glass and Ciaran McFaul of Derry all converted their penalties before Conor Doherty slotted home the winning kick in ice-cool style.“They were the five men that hit them in the National League final and stepped up again tonight,” reflected Harte.“I’m awful proud of them, we were hugely competitive.
