Mikel Arteta is entering the final year of his contract as Arsenal manager and ex-Gunners defender Bacary Sagna wants to see his former teammate sign an extension
Arteta is entering the final year of his current deal and former Gunners defender Bacary Sagna, who spent three years playing alongside the Spaniard, believes he would be the "most important signing Arsenal will make this summer".
"The most important signing Arsenal will make this summer is Mikel committing to the club with a new contract," Sagna told CoinPoker. "The reason Arsenal are competing at the top is because of Mikel Arteta. You have to applaud the way that he has transformed Arsenal since becoming the manager. "He made Arsenal compete again. There is a competitiveness and hunger in the squad that was missing until he walked through the door. When they came over to Dubai for the winter break, I spent time with Arteta and his coaching staff, and you could see how invested every single member of his team was in the project.
Arteta was linked with a move to Barcelona earlier this year, having come through the club's famed La Masia academy, but he rubbished reports from Spain claiming he was set to quit Arsenal as "fake news".
