'Millions watched my role in the Coronation - I had one thought in my head'
As keeper of the Jewel House at the Tower of London, fewer positions come with higher stakes attached, but for Brigadier Andrew Jackson it is just part and parcel of his everyday life at His Majesty’s fortress in the centre of London.
Telling us about the moment he was asked to carry the Sovereign’s Ring in the procession, Andrew laughs, “I had to try and be cool about it because it was an absolutely incredible thing to do and such an honour.” In a moment that was watched by more than 20 million people in the UK, Andrew reveals what was going through his head at the time. “We were waiting to be formed up in our procession and then at the right moment, we came into the Abbey and processed through with our items.
Our talk with the Governor comes as the Tower unveils its new exhibition which celebrates the Crown Jewels and the history of Coronations in the UK. A Commonwealth coin on loan from the British Museum can be seen which is thought to have been made after the medieval Coronation Regalia was destroyed and melted down by Oliver Cromwell after the Civil War.
