For 17 long months motorists endured long delays as traffic ground to standstill
It was the desperately needed £15m project to reduce congestion and improve air quality on one of Manchester and Salford's busiest roads. But it's fair to say the Regent Road roadworks didn't quite go to plan.
Andrew Burgess works at Sheila's Family Stores opposite Salford Lads Club in Ordsall. He says Regent Road is still chockablock, and it's not being helped by ongoing roadworks at the nearby junction of Trafford Road and Broadway. "Everyone complains about it. And on matchdays we have people parking all over and walking to ground."
"From 4-6pm it gets busy when people are coming home, but it's much, much better than it was in 2018-19. Then it could take us 20 minutes to get into the city centre - that's where we do most of deliveries and pick-ups.Michael Martin, who works at Manchester Auto Electricals, on Duncan Street, said traffic had improved, but was concerned about the impact the construction of more than 500 flats on the site of the old Wellington pub on Regent Road would have.
"It's a worry for the business because if people are going to get stuck in traffic all the time, or if they can't park, they're going to start going elsewhere." "But the congestion on the road is always going to be like this unless something really radical happens."
