Minister for State Sean Fleming has said the Government will not put a cap or quota in place for the number of Ukrainians coming into the country
Yesterday, his Fianna Fáil party colleague and TD for Clare Cathal Crowe had called for a cap on Ukrainian refugees coming into the county, contrary to official Government policy and EU law.
Mr Crowe described a limit as a"sensible position" given some Ukrainians were sleeping in tents, or on airport floors, and this could not be construed as providing quality of care. "We're very clear at a Government level, and Cathal agrees as well, there is no cap at EU level and there is no cap at national level, so we have not put a cap on the number of Ukrainians that are coming into the country.
Mr Fleming said that the agencies at national level will visit Clare to look at the particular situation there. He said that a lot of Ukrainians went to places where there are a lot of hotels, such as Donegal, Kerry and Clare, that were not fully occupied after Covid-19.
