A police officer is facing a misconduct probe over the PSNI's handling of an investigation into a violent assault which left a man spending Christmas in hospital with a broken leg.
The police watchdog said it received a complaint that police failed to properly investigate and failed to update the victim about their enquiries. He told Belfast Live: "They won't even return my calls. You would ring and get through to a switchboard. No one ever took a witness statement from me."As soon as the complaint was lodged they came to the door, and nothing since. It's just the most bizarre thing."
He also claimed police have still not returned his belongings - a coat and a Christmas jumper - which were taken for potential DNA samples. "My next appointment with the fracture clinic will be April, where they're hoping there's some movement with the bone that it's fused," he said. In a statement a spokesman for the Police Ombudsman's office said: "We received a complaint that police failed to properly investigate a serious assault in Belfast city centre last December, and also failed to update the victim about the progress of their enquiries.
