Miss Texas VolunteerIf anyone had told Denise Kwong’s classmates at Clear Lake High School that she would become a beauty queen, they wouldn’t have believed it, she says.
She is now 25 and the newly crowned Miss Texas Volunteer from a pageant that includes swimsuit, talent and evening gown categories and awards the winner a $25,000 cash scholarship. “I ran into her at High Fashion Fabrics when I was buying fabric for Miss Universe,” said Gabriel, who will represent her country in the 2023 Miss Universe pageant Jan 15 in New Orleans, La.Kwong, whose family is of Cantonese-Hong Kong heritage, was excited to meet Gabriel.
She handmade the shoes she wore in the interview segment of the pageant, and she has a patent pending on a stiletto with a push-button adjustable heel. At Clear Lake High, Kwong’s love for history continued under the tutelage of Susan Heep, who she cited as her most influential teacher when Kwong was awarded a Presidential Scholar Medallion at a 2015 ceremony in Washington, D.C.
