San Antonio Missions’ jumbled starting pitching rotation continues to produce
Highlighting the week that was and previewing the upcoming week for the San Antonio Missions:
But the frequent turnover hasn’t prevented the group from producing, as the Missions’ pitching staff ranked second in the Texas League with a 3.88 ERA and posted a league-leading .237 opposing batting average last week, spurring a road series split with the Springfield Cardinals. Brandon Komar, who was used mostly as a reliever until July, made perhaps the best of his 22 career starts on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings while setting a new career high with eight strikeouts.
Thomas Eshelman, a 28-year-old MLB veteran, returned to San Antonio’s rotation two weeks ago after spending the previous two months with Triple-A El Paso. Though San Antonio has the worst second-half record in Texas League South at 29-34, the Missions are assured a postseason spot after winning the first-half division title at 38-29.Joshua Mears, San Diego’s No. 14 prospect and the top-ranked active hitter with the Missions, started to find a footing against Springfield following a difficult first two series at the Double-A level.
He posted his first three-hit game since April 19 on Saturday and mashed his first grand slam of 2022 on Wednesday.Third baseman Connor Hollis went 9 for 19 with two doubles, a homer, seven RBI and four walks against Springfield, continuing a strong run since returning from Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 30.
