The Last White Man, by Mohsin Hamid, review: An uncanny allegory for white supremacy with echoes of Get Out
Taking its cue from the explosive opening of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Anders wakes one morning to discover he is no longer white. His skin has, inexplicably, become “dark”. Anders’ first reaction is to keep this to himself. He hides in his tiny, imprisoning flat “to wait for an undoing, an undoing that did not come”. In strikingly long sentences that demand attention, Hamid expresses the gamut of Anders’ subsequent emotions: disorientation, fear, disgust, rage, despair.
As more people “stop being white”, social media commentary becomes apoplectic. Klan-like mobs emerge. They are hellbent on eradicating the expanding, newly “brown” community and defending some illusory vision of cultural “purity”. Hamid’s tightly structured plot tracks Anders as he adjusts to this precarious new reality, a world “reborn into another life… where none of the old rules applied any longer”., Hamid’s uncanny tale is alert to the notion that race is a construct.
