Ireland's Mona McSharry claimed 50m Breaststroke bronze at the World Aquatics World Cup in Baku, completing a full set of medals after gold and silver earlier in the meet.
Ireland's Mona McSharry won bronze in the 50m Breaststroke at the opening stop of the World Aquatics World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday. The Sligo native leaves the competition with a full set of medals, having earlier claimed gold in the 100m Breaststroke and silver in the 200m Breaststroke. The result marks a strong start to the World Aquatics World Cup series for the Irish swimmer.
McSharry Completes Full Medal Set
The 50m Breaststroke final was an extremely tight race, with just eight hundredths of a second separating the three medallists. Belgium's Florine Gaspard took gold in 29.75 seconds. Ralina Giliazova secured silver in 29.81. McSharry finished just behind the Russian in 29.83, taking the bronze medal.
The margin was so narrow that any small improvement could have changed the colour of McSharry's medal. Her time of 29.83 left her two hundredths of a second behind Giliazova and eight hundredths behind Gaspard. It was close to being an even better reward for the Irish swimmer amid the tight race.
McSharry had already made her mark at the Baku meet before the 50m final. She won the 100m Breaststroke title and took silver in the 200m Breaststroke, establishing herself as one of the standout performers of the opening World Cup stop.
Ellen Walshe Impresses in Baku Finals
Fellow Irish swimmer Ellen Walshe also competed in Baku. The Dubliner finished fifth in the 200m Individual Medley final with a time of 2:08.07. China's Yiting Yu won gold in 2:02.80. The Netherlands' Marrit Steenbergen took silver in 2:05.09, and Britain's Abbie Wood claimed bronze in 2:05.69.
Walshe had previously won silver in the 200m Butterfly on Thursday. Her performances in Baku add to a promising start to the World Aquatics World Cup for the Irish team. Both Walshe and McSharry now turn their attention to the upcoming stops on the circuit.
Next Stops in Tashkent and Astana
The World Aquatics World Cup continues with its second stop in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. That competition takes place from 8 to 10 October. The third stop follows in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 15 to 17 October.
McSharry and Walshe will both travel to Tashkent for the second meet. The back-to-back schedule gives the Irish swimmers further opportunities to build on their results in Baku and to compete against a strong international field.
The World Aquatics World Cup is a key event on the international swimming calendar, bringing together top athletes across multiple strokes and distances. For McSharry, the Baku meet delivered a complete set of medals and confirmed her form ahead of the remaining stops. For Walshe, a silver in the 200m Butterfly and a fifth-place finish in the 200m Individual Medley provided solid results against a competitive field.
Ireland's strong showing in Baku comes as the swimmers prepare for the next challenges in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The results in Azerbaijan set a positive tone for the remainder of the World Aquatics World Cup series.
