Controversial East Bay housing project wins in courtcan move ahead with a 315-unit apartment building in Lafayette that has long been challenged by local residents. The ruling comes after more than a decade of conflict, including two lawsuits, a ballot referendum and years of City Hall hearings, which put the Terraces of Lafayette project into the regional spotlight as an example of how local opposition can frustrate large-scale housing development.
But last Wednesday, an appellate court panel upheld the Superior Court’s ruling, allowing the project to finally move forward. San Francisco Chief Economist Ted Egan and Senior Economist Asim Khan stated in the latest controller’s report published last week that even as new business formation rates remain flat in other industries, new restaurants are opening in San Francisco at levels not seen since the start of the pandemic.
