An infant in California and a toddler in Washington, D.C. have been diagnosed with monkeypox, a disease that spread internationally in recent months.

More than 15,000 cases have been reported by the international community, including in countries that do not usually see the disease, the CDC reported.Mature, oval-shaped monkeypox virions, left, and spherical immature virions, right, taken by an election microscope in 2003. Health officials say the disease, which is often spread among men who have sex with other men, can also be transmitted through prolonged personal contact or contact with infected bedsheets or towels — objects that have prolonged contact with infected persons.
