Ethan Hawke took some time to praise the creative freedom Marvel gave to the team behind MoonKnight 'There was a lot of playfulness and a lot of willingness to fail and a lot of willingness to have bad ideas.'
Ethan Hawke praises Marvel's oversight on the production of Moon Knight, stating the studio allowed creative freedom when developing the series. Hawke plays cult leader Arthur Harrow, the antagonist of the Disney+ miniseries. Moon Knight sees Hawke star opposite Oscar Isaac, who plays the titular supernaturally empowered, complex hero.
A religious zealot and cult leader who worships the god Ammit, Hawke's Arthur Harrow is a dark figure set to be a direct opposing force of the Khonshu-empowered Moon Knight. Inspired by the Nobel Prize-winning scientist-turned twisted mad doctor and operative of think-tank O.M.N.I.U.
"The one thing I wouldn't want this whole conversation to go by without saying is that in my whole experience, usually when there's a huge budget, there's a tremendous amount of fear. And the people in charge are incredibly controlling, and creativity is reduced. In my entire experience, with you Grant and with Marvel, it's the opposite of that.
As seen in a clip when Harrow summons a demon, Moon Knight continues to expand the MCU in ways that the franchise hasn't previously explored, diving into the occult following on from the introduction of Agatha Harkness and the prophecy of the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision.
The MCU has become well-known for following long-established plans through interconnective stories, with certain sequences being pre-visualized long before their respective movies begin filming, such as in the case of Avengers: Infinity War. As such, it could be assumed that Marvel Studios has a heavy hand in a majority of their productions, with some voices leaving the studio after citing creative differences.
