A letter from Mental Health Ireland was among seven complaints about the Tom Hanks comedy-drama, A Man Called Otto, while cinemagoers also took issue with Oppenheimer and a Winnie the Pooh spinoff
It’s been a busy year for the Irish Film Classification Office , which has received more complaints from the public about movies during the first nine months of 2023 than it did in the previous three years combined.
Another complainant called for a Winnie the Pooh spinoff to be banned on grounds of public morality, while an email was also received from a critic of the Cillian Murphy blockbuster Oppenheimer. A letter from Mental Health Ireland was among seven complaints received by IFCO in relation to the film. They described the “darkly comedic way” in which self-harm was portrayed in the movie was “ill-considered and unhelpful”.
“I’m sickened by this film,” they wrote, adding that they were “personally offended” by the “stomach-churning, put-on accents” of the cast, which included Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. One person got in touch to ask IFCO to ban a British slasher movie called Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, even though they had not seen the film and were unsure whether it was real.
