The Rail, Maritime and Transport Union has been locked in a battle with Network Rail, the train companies, and the Government for months, throwing commuters’ travel plans in disarray as strikes have continued.said both offers were rejected following “in-depth consultation” with every level of the union.“Our members cannot accept the ripping up of their terms and conditions or to have safety standards on the railway put into jeopardy under the guise of so-called modernisation.
He said the union viewed Network Rail’s plan for maintenance as “unsafe”, and that they would be seeking meetings with both Network Rail and the Rail Delivery Group to work towards a negotiated settlement. “If our union did accept these offers, we would see a severe reduction in scheduled maintenance tasks, making the railways less safe, the closure of all ticket offices and thousands of jobs stripped out of the industry when the railways need more investment not less. “The union will start making preparations to re-ballot union members in May, when the existing strike mandate runs out, the statement said.
