Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities are scrambling to find survivors.
The part of Syria affected by the quake is divided between government and opposition-held territory, the later of which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces.
“We fear that the deaths are in the hundreds,” doctor Muheeb Qaddour told the Associated Press from the town Atmeh, referring to the rebel-held northwest. “We are under extreme pressure.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake.

Powerful 7.8 Quake Knocks Down Buildings in Turkey, SyriaA 7.8 magnitude quake has knocked down multiple buildings in southeast Turkey and Syria and many casualties are feared. Ten deaths have been reported in Turkey so far.
