Right now, he’s presiding over an underperforming team in all formats. Losing to a second-string India on home soil was bad, but getting belted 4-1 by the West Indies and then Bangladesh was equally unimpressive.
For the length of his tenure, the topic has been taboo in a public sense. A wide down the legside. Don’t touch it. It’s not worth it. Focus on the next ball. Worry about yourself. Don’t damage your chances of being selected by speaking out. These were hardened and proven international cricketers desperate for Langer – an Aussie Test great from a golden era - to change in time for the 2021/22 Ashes.
And he did exceptionally well. Under his watch, the team retained the most prized urn-sized trophy available on foreign soil and for a while, was the toast of a nation. And still those who are on Langer’s wavelength cannot get enough of his style. They relish the insatiable intensity he played with and has now adopted in coaching. Hit longer, train harder, run more, do as he did. In fairness, it worked for Marnus Labuschagne. But how many other Australian Test cricketers have improved since mid-July 2019? Not enough.
In generations gone by, the captain ran the Australian side and the coach worked largely on the outskirts. But under Langer’s model, he is the King on the chess board, plus a selector and spokesman. He’s anything but peripheral. Ponting and Waugh’s temporary appointments in 2019 created a layer between Langer and the players that those in the squad have privately praised since. Maybe that’s an idea?
