Alas, that’s what this once-promising season has become. A highlight. One highlight. In the years to come, you’ll see it pop up on this or that TV program and it will be edited into those great-play montages that are shown during timeouts. Perhaps you’ll see it during the opening of the Celtics’ pregame show on NBC Sports Boston.
With their loss to the Heat Monday night, the Celtics also lost an opportunity to get a seat at that prestigious championship table. They’ll never be mentioned in the same sentence with, say, the 2007-08 Celtics, or the 2013 Red Sox, or the 2010-11 Bruins, or the 2003 Patriots.Instead, they’ve been relegated to an outer lounge arena with the likes of the 2008 Red Sox, who lost to Tampa Bay in the ALCS, and the 2012 Celtics, who lost to the Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.
Celtics forward Jayson Tatum turned his ankle in the open seconds and was never himself the rest of the night, but the Celtics lost because of their dismal shooting, Most fans won’t remember the 2022-23 Celtics, either. Sadly, that’s just the way it is. Despite all the talk about “Unfinished Business,” despite the stirring and emotional comeback to force a Game 7 against the Heat, the 2022-23 season will live on as a highlight.That’s the keeper.
