A mother who lost two baby girls at Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) expressed shock after an external review into care at the maternity unit in Galway was launched. The HSE announced that reviews are underway into the deliveries of nine babies where seven experienced hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and six received neonatal hypothermia treatment. This follows a 2018 review that found failings in the care of the mother's daughters, who both died.

A mother who lost two baby girls at Portiuncula University Hospital said she is in “complete shock” after a new external review into care at the maternity unit in Galway has been launched.

In 2018, an external review into the care of 18 births in PUH, two of which were Lorraine and Warren Reilly’s daughters, was published. The parents received unreserved apologies for failings in the care of their daughters who both died. Heartbroken Lorraine said: “Yesterday I was in complete shock. I couldn't believe the same thing was happening again and today I’ve spent half the morning crying. I’m devastated over it. I’m devastated for the families involved now, I just can’t believe it’s happening again, to be honest.”

Warren added: “Today I am in shock and feeling very numb to the whole thing. A decade further on and still having these cases. I’m trying to get my head around whether the facility is equipped for anything to go wrong other than a straightforward birth. There’s clearly something wrong.”
