The driver had the 'audacity' to present gardaí with fake certs after their car was seized for having no insurance

A motorist has gone from a road traffic offence to a possible fraud charge after presenting to the garda station with false insurance certs.

The gardaí gave the driver a 10-day grace period to present their policy, with the gardaí keeping the car in a compound until the motorist did so.However, the driver had the “audacity” to present a false insurance cert when they appeared at the station, which could result in the road traffic offence being upgraded to a possible fraud charge.

“This 10-day discretionary period is given because we understand that there may be a valid reason why you couldn’t immediately present the policy and we try to work with you, within reason. In Ireland, you must have motor insurance to drive a car in your own name or as a named driver on someone else's policy, if you don’t gardaí have the power to impound your vehicle, serve you with a massive fine and penalty points, and you may even be hit with a jail sentence.
