The simple blood test for cancer is being trialled in the NHS and could speed-up diagnosis, data suggests. The Galleri test correctly revealed two out of every three cancers among more than 6,000 people in England and Wales who had visited their GP with suspected symptoms.

A blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer could speed up diagnosis and"help save thousands of lives" if it is developed successfully, scientists have said.

Overall, the test - which detects fragments of tumour DNA circulating in the bloodstream - correctly revealed cancer 66% of the time, researchers found. The accuracy of the test was also dependent on the stage of the cancer - ranging from 24% for very early-stage tumours, to 95% for advanced disease .The findings from the Symplify trial were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, in Chicago, and published in The Lancet Oncology journal.

Brian Nicholson, associate professor at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford, said the findings suggest that multi-cancer early detection tests can play a role"to confirm that symptomatic patients should be evaluated for cancer before pursuing other diagnoses".
