'The High Court in Goa has also directed the trial court hearing the murder trial, which is ongoing for the past five years, to expedite it and conclude it within one year.'

The mum of tragic backpacker Danielle McLaughlin said she is “relieved” that a bail application by the man accused of her daughter’s killing has been dismissed by an Indian High Court. This direction has now brought some hope to Danielle’s mum Andrea Brannigan as she said it’s the first time the High Court has become involved in Danielle’s case.

She had travelled to India where she planned to train as a yoga teacher. The night before she was found dead, Danielle had attended a Holi party near Canacona beach. On Monday, Bhagat’s application for bail was rejected by the High Court in Goa with the court noting that he has a history of allegedly assaulting inmates and jail staff. He has been in custody for the past six and a half years.

“Hopefully now Danielle will get justice after all these years as we as a family need to see that. We also want justice for Danielle,” said Andrea. The trial is only a third of the way through the witnesses since it opened in 2018 and this has left Andrea and her family frustrated at the slow pace.
