Munster overcame a sluggish first half to crush Scarlets 29-8 at Thomond Park, extending their winning record against Welsh teams to ten consecutive victories.
Munster recovered from a dismal first half performance to secure their tenth consecutive victory over Welsh opposition, defeating Scarlets at Thomond Park. Two characteristic tries from Gavin Coombes in the second half ensured a bonus-point triumph for Munster , who, despite only managing one penalty in 11 URC games this season, capitalized on tapped and lineout penalties to dominate the game. However, both teams were guilty of numerous unforced errors throughout the match.
Munster had a try from Tom Ahern ruled out in the 12th minute after a lineout, as the Television Match Official (TMO) Stefano Roscini spotted a knock-on from Rory Scannell during the maul formation. At that point, Scarlets were temporarily down to 14 players due to center Johnny Williams being sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on. Surprisingly, it was Scarlets who took the lead while a man down when Ioan Lloyd converted a penalty after 18 minutes from 30 meters, having previously missed one from a greater distance. Munster's lineout was inconsistent, but they held a strong advantage in the scrum, and they surged ahead just before the yellow card expired. A penalty won in the scrum was directed to the left corner, where Jack O'Donoghue secured a clean catch. Clever midfield interplay between Scannell and Tom Farrell sent academy winger Shay McCarthy, replacing the injured Diarmuid Kilgallen, on a cutting run to score his fifth try in 13 appearances. Burns converted to make it 7-3 after 22 minutes, and the score remained unchanged until halftime as both teams continued to commit a series of basic errors. Coombes steadied Munster with a characteristic try from close range five minutes into the second half, following excellent work from Tom Ahern. Referee Federico Vedovelli was perfectly positioned to see Coombes squeeze over for his 48th try in 112 appearances. The momentum shifted, and several phases from a tapped penalty on the left culminated in the right corner with Alex Kendellen touching down, and Burns adding the conversion to extend the lead to 19-3 after 52 minutes. Scarlets responded with a superb try from replacement Macs Page, who had been on the field for less than a minute, from a chip and chase down the right. Paddy Patterson came very close to stopping him, managing to get a hand under the ball but ultimately failing to prevent the touchdown. Munster secured the bonus point after 64 minutes when Coombes scored his second try following another penalty to the right corner, after good work by Brian Gleeson and John Hodnett. Burns converted from the right before making way for Tony Butler. Shane Daly, who had dropped a Farrell pass a meter from the line in the right corner, was sent to the sin bin in the final minute for a high tackle on Scarlets center Joe Roberts. However, Munster finished strongly when center Farrell scored after another penalty to touch.
