Mets drive Joe Musgrove from game with big sixth; Padres finish series 3-for-26 with runners in scoring position
could not complete a three-game sweep because their deficiency in getting runners around the bases persisted. And without the benefit of the long balls that lifted them to victory in the first two games of the series, they paid for their inability to finish offensively when two of their most reliable pitchers had a bad inning.
“To win two out of three against these guys — a really, really good team — and to beat the two guys that we did beat and then to do what we did here in the ninth inning,” Jake Cronenworth said, “I think it’s a testament of who we are as a team.”The Padres did force Mets closer Edwin Diaz into the game after they had scored twice and had runners at the corners with no outs in the ninth.
The Padres were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position Sunday and 3-for-26 in the series. They won the first two games because they got excellent pitching and Hosmer hit a two-run homer Friday and Machado did the same Saturday. Mets starter Carlos Carrasco allowed six hits and walked two in five innings. But despite having at least one hit in each of the first four innings and a runner in scoring position in two of them, the Padres were scoreless.
Seven pitches later, Musgrove had gotten three routine groundball outs and the game was still tied 0-0.
