But, like Ms Adedeji, many women are rejected due to their BMI being too high. The NHS states that it must sit between 20 and 27 and be stable for over a year in order to have the surgery. According to new research released in the documentary, the number of people getting breast reductions on the NHS in the UK have declined in recent years. Since 2013, admissions in England for breast reduction surgery on the NHS have fallen by 50 per cent.
Ms Adedeji did not seek out private avenues, and instead, used the rejection as a moment to change the narrative and own her body. “No one was coming to save me,” she says. “I thought that if I stepped into it and said ‘yes I’ve got big boobs’. Nobody can joke. You can’t bully me anymore because I’ve already made myself the joke.
