, a new documentary about the brand that hit Netflix this week. I mostly knew the basic facts that the film laid out: Founded in New York City in 1892, Abercrombie had struggled over the years until it rebranded as a teen retailer best known for wildly sexy ads in the 1990s. But I hadn’t realized how openly the brandagainst anyone who didn’t fit the white, thin, cisgender, Cali-cool mold of their ideal customer .
When we moved back to New York City, just in time for me to start third grade, my Abercrombie obsession waned somewhat; after all, the upper-crust girls at my new elementary school wore Ralph Lauren polos and Tiffany bracelets, status symbols so rarefied that I gave up on my junior-diva aspirations and just defeatedly wore our school uniform sans stylistic flourishes.
