We’re a long way from ‘operation citizen’, when we still don’t feel safe cycling to work and doing our bit for the planet, writes Siobhan O'Connor Reelmammy
It’s May, the sun is shining and I feel great pulling up outside my office just off O’Connell Street.
Phew I think, 20 minutes to get here, far quicker and environmentally conscious than getting public transport.I get a weird feeling in my stomach as I scan the area.Another man begs outside the supermarket next to the office.This is one of our new improved North Dublin streets, a stone’s throw away from our thoroughfare.The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar opened a state of the art Garda Station on O’Connell Street in March.
The new station also serves as a permanent office for the Irish Tourism Assistance Service, helping tourists who are victims of crime.I don’t dwell on the vibe, lock my bike and head in to my meeting. After a nice few hours with colleagues I saunter out of our high tech building and my good mood fades.The scumbags had the audacity to leave my lock strewn on the ground, a reminder that it doesn’t matter whether you adopt caution in what’s still a crime ridden street.I’m rushing to collect the kids so don’t have time to pop to my local new improved Garda Station to report said crime.“If your bike is under €1000, you can report the theft online.
