Gilly Atkinson's daughter Laura passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest
A mum has shared her story to raise awareness about heart health after her daughter died suddenly aged just 29. Laura West was swimming at Lancaster University when she had a heart attack and passed away.
"I am used to what might happen to me in the future. I've not got a normal extended lifespan like everybody else, but I know what I'm doing is in Laura's memory and saving other people's lives as much as possible." Helen and Gillian began their fundraising journey for defibrillators in June 2021. Helen had asked about getting a defibrillator at her care home, but was "shocked and disappointed" when she was turned down.
Gilly said: "We've got all of these guys who volunteer their time, all to put them in place for us. We need these guys and everyone who's involved and volunteer with us to help us with our mission in saving lives. "Every time we get notified of a defibrillator being used, we still have to go straight out to it, it doesn't matter what time it happens we have to go straight out to the defibrillator," she said. "We make sure there's new pads in place and the ancillaries, which is the medical equipment, is inside the cabinet."
Gilly says the group installed one defibrillator in Fleetwood and two days later, it was used to save someone's life. Unfortunately, it's not always a happy ending.
