Emma Edwards has been in dialysis for a number of years after her kidneys declined following the birth of her son in 2000
When a woman from Lancashire was pregnant with her second son, she was diagnosed with kidney disease that would change the rest of her life.
Being on dialysis for a few years, it was when her husband, Craig Edwards came forward that she was able to undergo a kidney transplant on September, 29 2012. "Never in a million years did we think that he would be a match," Emma told LancsLive. The mum managed to have five years with the new kidney until her transplanted kidney "failed again" in 2017 and she has been back on dialysis for almost seven years. However, the family might have more hope closer to home.
Fortunately for the family, they didn't need to undergo this as the hospital instead ran a 'wet test' where Emma's blood samples were mixed with Bradley's - something they were told was a "one in a million chance". Craig added: "Unfortunately Emma has a really reactive immune system, so when it sees something it creates those antibodies." Knowing the risks, Emma had to have a meeting with doctors about the transplant and the fact her immune system would have to be significantly lowered.
Craig helps his wife by giving her two needles - one for taking her blood count and another for putting the clean blood back in. Emma explains that when the blood is taken out, it goes through a dialysis machine with a "lot of other chemicals" and is "basically a giant kidney."
