There’s a loser in this scenario, too. That, of course, and inevitably, is the musician. Even the really big artists earn less than you might think, with Spotify’s royalty rate working out at a maximum of $8,000 per million streams.
Members of that one million club are, lest we forget, massively paltry in number: of the 11 million artists on Spotify, just 9,000 rack up monthly streams over six figures. In this Christmas scenario, Spotify is Scrooge perched on a golden throne while the music business consists of a zillion Tiny Tims singing for their supper before going to bed hungry.
Artists have been calling out the inequities around streaming for years and December has become a focal point for their ire . “It’s the time of year when socials are full of Spotify stats Pls remember Ed & Taylor don’t need anymore money & streaming is suffocating small independent artists,” tweeted guitarist Billy Watman when Spotify rolled out its 2021 Wrapped feature. Just this week, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow retweeted a message asserting that Spotify “doesn’t give a flying **** about musicians”.
There was further bad news for the music community this week, with competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority , ruling that the labels and streaming services are not making “excessive profits” at the expense of artists.
