Gilly Atkinson has learned she has the same condition that led to the death of her daughter Laura at the age of just 29
A mum has opened up about the importance of public access defibrillators after her daughter passed away from a 'sudden' cardiac arrest. Laura West, 29, had been swimming at the pool in Lancaster University when she suffered the medical episode and passed away.
"I am used to what might happen to me in the future. I've not got a normal extended lifespan like everybody else, but I know what I'm doing is in Laura's memory and saving other people's lives as much as possible." Gilly added: "Our mission is obviously to save as many lives as we can for our community. Being in this area, we know how stretched the NHS is and for the likes of Over Wyre, it's hard for the ambulance service to get out there."
Since then, Helen and Gillian have been holding more raffles, family fun days, pub quizzes, bingo events and other fundraising nights to help fund more defibrillators for the community. Sadly, Gillian has had to step down from her role recently, but Helen, Gilly and the group of volunteers remain passionate about getting as many defibrillators installed as they can.
Defibrillators are used to give a high energy shock to the heart of someone who is having a cardiac arrest. Thanks ti "With Poulton being a busy centre at the weekend and it happened at the weekend, you just hope the person using it is OK. You don't always get to hear about it, but it's those times that you worry."
