Gardai have confirmed that they attended the scene after being alerted to the discovery and located a human skull on the embankment.
Historical human remains have been discovered near the site of a new marina on the Ulster Canal greenway near Clones in Co Monaghan. The discovery was made by a member of the public on Sunday.
In a statement, An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai were alerted to historical human remains that were located at the Ulster Canal in Clones, Co Monaghan on the evening of Sunday, July 14 at approximately 5pm. Gardai attended the scene and located a human skull on the embankment." Gardai said the human skull will be sent to a forensic anthropologist for examination. It is understood from the initial assessment of the remains that they are thought to be historic in nature, but a more detailed examination is required.

Mr McCleary said he and his daughter walked up by the new embankment when he spotted the skull.
He said the crown of the skull was exposed and he knew straight away that it was an adult skull.
