It seems many people in Liverpool are wrong about what happened to the buildings surrounding The Pig & Whistle
Between 1940 and 1942, Merseyside sustained heavy bombing from the German Luftwaffe. Due to Liverpool, Bootle and Birkenhead's strategic importance as large west coast ports with links to North America, they were targeted by Nazi bombers during the Second World War and the region suffered significant damage as a result. Thousands of children from Merseyside were evacuated to Lancashire, Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire to avoid the danger.
It's a commonly-accepted truth in Liverpool that The Pig & Whistle was the last man standing on its block. However, ECHO reader Mark Anthony Craig got in touch this week to tell us this Liverpool story is in fact a myth. He wrote: 'I’m afraid you’ve made a very common error in your assumption about what happened to the buildings attached to it. You’ve assumed they were lost during the blitz. 'St Peter’s Buildings, which stood on the site around the pub, survived the war .
