The bill raising SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, is now on Gov. Phil Murphy's desk
, would increase the minimum monthly SNAP benefit from $50 to $95 per household. The bill also gives the Commissioner of Human Services the authority to increase the amount depending on the available money in the state budget.
There are 770,000 people in New Jersey, a state with 9.2 million, who rely on SNAP formerly known as food stamps. Recipients receive a debit card to buy fruits and vegetables; beans, fish, poultry, meat; bread, tortillas, cereal; milk and cheese; and seeds and plants that produce food.
