Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman said he swerved his vehicle to avoid a dog and hit the parked car.

Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman in a 2015 photo.Carteret Mayor Daniel J. Reiman, was issued a traffic ticket for careless driving Thursday for a crash two days earlier in which he struck a parked vehicle near his home.

Municipal court records show the incident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Carteret and Taylor avenues. Carteret Officer Matthew Failace issued the ticket.Reiman said he was near his home on Carteret Avenue - a wide street with center islands - and swerved his personal vehicle right when a dog “jetted” into the road. He struck a vehicle, then swerved left. He was not injured, and unbuckled his seatbelt and waited for police, fire and EMS to arrive.

“Like a good neighbor I’ve spoken to the owner of the impacted car, reported the accident to my insurance company and followed up with my doctor,” Reiman wrote in the email. “This is my first accident or ticket ever after driving for nearly 27 years; so like millions of American I can now note an accident on my driving history.”

Reiman said he expects opponents will exploit the incident and create a false narrative since he is up for re-election in the coming year.
