The former Tory chairman is refusing to stand down despite previously supporting a proposal to hand the public power to 'kick out bad MPs'
, the former Cabinet minister suggested giving voters more power by enabling them to vote MPs out if they break the rules.
Trumpeting the reforms proposed in the 2010 Conservative manifesto, Mr Zahawi added: “This is a radical change, and a change that is truly needed, it removes the concept of the ‘safe seat’ and makes MPs directly answerable to their constituents over the whole parliament, not just every five years. However, while the 2010 Tory manifesto promised to give voters the power to remove MPs in cases of “proven serious wrongdoing”, the current law only applies to members handed a custodial prison sentence, those suspended for more than 10 days for breaching parliamentary standards, and those convicted of providing false or misleading expenses claims – none of which applies to Mr Zahawi, who has paid a penalty to HMRC over his tax affairs.
There is also disappointment that he was only given 30 minutes’ warning that he was to be fired and that the findings of Sir Laurie’s report would be published.
