Drouin was the QMJHL and CHL player of the year in 2012-13 after producing 105 points in 49 games. Cole Harbour's MacKinnon was the Memorial Cup MVP and went No. 1 overall to the Avalanche in the NHL draft a few weeks later. But he again struggled to raise his game, with his best season a modest 53 points in 2018-19. He also needed time away from hockey a couple of years ago to deal with mental health challenges, which he has since said are now under control.
Not long after joining forces again, MacKinnon and Drouin got to work preparing for the challenge. They were spotted numerous times working on their game together in various rinks and it's clear MacKinnon is invested in getting the most out of his close friend and perhaps reviving his career. It's obviously very early in the process for Colorado head coach Jared Bednar to make any firm decisions about what his lines will look like and said to reporters about a possible reunion:"That's to be determined, that's to be earned."
