Nathan shares his path from school to air traffic control, revealing how he overcame challenges to achieve a career in aviation. With insights on training, assignment, and personal growth, his story inspires aspiring controllers to pursue their dreams with confidence.
Tell us about yourself, Nathan. What did you study? I studied aviation at ATC college. I got the grades I needed - two H5s and passed five subjects.
After that, I worked in fitness for about 18 months, then joined Airnav last September. It was a childhood dream. I grew up near the airport, always watching planes. When I saw aviation opportunities online and on radio, I decided to pursue it.
How's the training going? It's intense but amazing. I started in September and now I'm in my final phase - the units endorsement. That's where you practice everything as if it were real, except you're talking to simulator pilots.
You use real-life airspace, rules, and gear. Where will you end up? I'll be based in Shannon once I complete training. They assigned me there based on demand.
So post-training, I'll be a high-level controller at Shannon En-Route Centre. What's your advice for others? Just go for it. If you're interested, try it - what's the worst that can happen?
If it doesn't work out, you'll know; if it does, you'll have no regrets. That's what I did, and it paid off
