If a car is travelling at 60 km/ph, then nine in 10 pedestrians die if they are hit, but if the cars is doing 30, 90% survive.

Gardaí and Road Safety chiefs are asking motorists to slow down this morning for ‘National Slow Down Day’.

They want motorists to remember that driving too fast increases the chance of hurting yourself or those around you.If the car is travelling at 60 km/ph, then nine in 10 pedestrians die if they are hit.Gardaí carry out a number of National Slow Down Days each year to try and raise awareness about the danger of speeding.

They are also reminding road users that driving conditions become more challenging as winter brings colder and wetter weather with less visibility. So far this year, 148 people have died on Irish roads - fewer than the 164 who died during the same period last year.
