National Trust hits back at Aira Force visitors who moaned Lake District beauty spot was 'rubbish'
The national Trust has hit back at visitors to a popular Lake District beauty spot who complained some footpaths were still off-limits following an improvement project.
The main force falls 70 feet from below a stone footbridge and is on land owned by the Lake District National Trust. Rated as the third most popular thing to do in Penrith, it has a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor from more than 2,200 people. A network of trails weaves its way from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing towering Himalayan firs, rare red squirrels, woodland glades, picnic spots and views out across Ullswater.
But the National Trust has responded to these comments left on the site, a spokesperson for the trust said: “In 2021 we began a project to enhance the walkways and improve access at Aira Force. This includes replacing the existing viewing area with a steel platform which will provide inspiring views of the waterfall and enhancing a section of the footpath to enable better access for a wider range of abilities.
“Having taken cautious steps to assess and ensure no further damage to the stone bridge, we have worked with an expert contractor to remove the fallen tree and can resume our work repairing and installing new walkways and footpaths.
