Parties with broad consensus on key issues agreeing to work together to make government more efficient — isn’t this exactly what we want?
Those of us in the electorate who aren’t political junkies would like a government that does its job and accomplishes good things for its citizens, preferably without wasting time trying to score points or trigger premature elections.
And the priorities specified in the agreement are good ones. Universal dental care would be a huge boon to Canadians without coverage — a group bound to increase with theThere is a growing understanding of the ways in which oral health may be connected with such serious conditions as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
Universal pharmacare is the other big promise in the agreement. In Quebec, we already have a prescription drug plan for people without private medical coverage., but access to provincial plans isn’t the same across Canada. In some provinces and territories, individuals are only eligible if they demonstrate high drug costs relative to their income or have a chronic disease.
Canada is the only industrialized nation with a universal health-care program that doesn’t help cover the cost of prescription drugs. Research suggests such a program could save billions a year through bulk purchasing. As it stands, many Canadians are forced to save to afford medication, while some don’t even fill their prescriptions because of the cost.
As for the rest — climate change commitments, reconciliation, help with affordable housing and more — sign me up. I hope this confidence-and-supply agreement continues and will enable these goals to be achieved by 2025. Far from being anti-democratic, it’s democracy at work.
