The Nets are expected to keep Ben Simmons, a source close to the situation tells sam_amick. More reaction to Kevin Durant’s trade request:

Though it’s fashionable and, to some extent, accurate to say that superstar contracts are year-to-year in practice, the fact that KD’s deal is that long dramatically changes his market.

Typically, superstars who demand trades wait until closer to the end of their contracts to do so. From their perspective, they aren’t “demanding a trade” so much as simply giving their incumbent teams advance notice that they do not intend to re-sign with them on their next contract. The incumbent team gets time to get something of value for the superstar leaving, and other teams are protected against trading something of value for a rental.

Durant, however, is not in that contractual situation. He may have a list of preferred destinations, but without the threat of free agency on the horizon for four years, any team that acquires him knows he has little choice but to play for them until his contract is up. He might not be happy about it, and that may affect his performance if so, but short of sitting out entirely, Durant won’t have much recourse.

That’s why the Nets will feel like they can trade Durant anywhere, even if he’d rather go to certain destinations. This is one of the rare instances where the team trading the superstar can drum up a league-wide bidding pool for their services.
